Today is the birthday of International Master Jay Bonin, born in New York on July 10, 1955.
Drawn to chess by the Spassky-Fischer match, he became one of the champions of the Marshall Chess Club, where he served both as an official and a trainer.
Nicknamed “The Iron Man of Chess,” Bonin has played over 25,000 games, participating in more than 3,300 official tournaments, according to the American Federation. 
Bonin reached his peak rating in July 1986 with 2455 Elo points.
Throughout his career, he has defeated players of the caliber of Reshevsky, R. Byrne, Miles, Yudasin, Woitkiewicz, Benjamin, Razuvaev, and Dzindzichashvili, as well as Nakamura and Kamsky in rapid.
In the following game, he bests Joshua Waitzkin, the protagonist of the famous movie “Searching for Bobby Fischer.”
