Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Jan Markos, born in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, on July 2, 1985.
A Slovak youth champion in the under 12, 14, and 16 categories, Jan also became the European under 16 champion in 2000.
Markos, a three-time absolute national champion, has represented Slovakia on multiple occasions in international competitions.
He reached his peak rating in July 2014 with 2602 Elo points.
Throughout his career, he has defeated elite players, such as Timman, Beliavsky, Duda, Ehlvest, Navara, and Wojtaszek.
A graduate of philosophy and evangelical theology, Maekos is also a renowned author of books, the most famous of which is "Under the Surface."
