Today is the birthday of the Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 28, 1994.
He lived between Russia and Japan with a Nepalese father and a Russian mother before settling in the Netherlands.
Anish achieved the title of Grandmaster at 14 and has been a five-time national champion, the most recent in 2023.
He has won three individual bronze medals in the five Olympiads he has participated in. Initially trained by Belgian GM Vladimir Chuchelov, he later moved on to super trainer Vladimir Tukmakov, with whom he made a further qualitative leap, keeping him in the world's top ten for a long time.
Among the 2020 Candidates Tournament participants, Giri reached his peak rating in October 2015 with 2798 Elo points.
Known for his extremely solid and risk-averse style, he has been married to WGM Sopiko Guramishvili since 2015.
The following game, taken from the Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee, which he won in 2023, shows him defeating the current world champion, Ding Liren.
