Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Simen Agdestein, born in Asker, Norway, on May 15, 1967.
He was promoted to Grand Master at eighteen and finished second in the 1986 World Junior Championship.
Throughout his career, Agdestein has won the Norwegian Championship nine times (the first in 1982, the latest in 2023!) and has represented his country in nine Olympiads, winning a gold medal in 1982.
Simen reached his peak rating in April 2019 with 2657 Elo points, although in January 1993, with 2630 points, he reached 20th place in the world rankings.
As a coach, he has the merit of having trained the future world champion Magnus Carlsen and Jon Ludwig Hammer for years.
Agdestein had an excellent football career, even making eight appearances with one goal for the Norwegian national team. Among other matches, he played against Italy in Pescara in 1988, in a game that ended 2-1 for the Azzurri. Agdestein participated in the Norwegian version of "Dancing with the Stars" and in a rock band's song dedicated to Magnus Carlsen.
